How to Protect your Baby from Sun during an Outing

Infant skin is more sensitive than adults which are at higher risk of catching several skin-related diseases and infections. It’s important to get sun rays but is advised to take your little ones out when the sunlight is not intense. The skin is still developing and doesn’t have enough sun-protecting pigment, melanin.

So, here are a few recommendations that can be useful for you to keep your baby safe from the sun’s rays:

  1. The best course of action for infants and young children is still to stay out of the sun as much as possible, especially during the sun's peak hours. Because their skin is starting to mature, this age group can be a little more tolerant of the sun.
  2. In general, babies over the age of six months can tolerate higher SPFs than younger babies, so aim for a range of 30 to 50 SPF and generously apply it to any exposed skin. Apply sunscreen again every minimum of two hours. Pay particular attention to areas that are simple to overlook, such as the ears and the back of the neck.
  3. The greatest approach to protect your baby from the sun is with shade, especially if they are under six months old. Keep your infant as much as you can in the shade, and if you can't locate any, make some for yourself using an umbrella, canopy, or stroller hood.
  4. Put on lightweight, long-sleeved clothing for your child to protect them from the sun. Additionally, make sure your child is always covered up with a broad-brimmed hat and UV-protective eyewear.
